Old Master Instruments

Rarely seen cellos from old masters.

Old stringed instruments captivate the senses like few other objects on earth.

Two cellos, two prizes,
one story.

It was a balmy summer evening in 2019 and the tension was in the air as the winners of the German Music Prize were announced. And suddenly: a murmur went through the hall. Sebastian Fritsch, a young cellist, was honored for his outstanding performance. What was so special? He played on a new cello, handmade by me, the cello maker Thorsten Theis.

Four years later, in 2023, history repeated itself. This time it was Philipp Schupelius, another highly talented cellist, who was honored with the coveted prize. He also played on a new cello that I had built.

A coincidence? Perhaps. But I believe that there is more to my instruments than just wood and strings.

It’s the attention to detail, the passion for the craft and over a quarter of a century of experience that goes into every single cello. It is the deep connection between artist and instrument that leads to extraordinary performance.

Because each of my cellos is unique, like a fingerprint. It is a piece of craftsmanship that grows with the artist, inspires him and enables him to express his music in all its facets.

Sebastian Fritsch and Philipp Schupelius have proven that a cello is more than just a musical instrument. It is a partner, a friend, a part of oneself.
